RICE – Rest, Ice, Compress, Elevate

Due to a rather untoward incident at a recent group run, I think this is a good time to post this reminder:

Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation- Management of Acute Injuries

RICE is the acronym used for Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation. It is used as the best initial treatment of soft tissue injuries such as sprains, strains, and contusions. The combination of RICE helps reduce inflammation that occurs after acute injury. It is important to remember that the earlier this treatment is put into place, the more effective it is.

Rest:

Rest and protect the injured area. If it hurts to bear weight on the injury, use crutches, if it hurts to move the area immobilize it with a splint.

Ice:

Apply ice or a frozen object, such as a bag of corn, etc from the freezer, to the injury. The cold will reduce swelling and pain at the injured site. This step should be done as soon as possible. Apply the frozen object to the area for 20 minutes three times a day for the first 48 hours.

Compression:

Compress the injured site by applying an Ace bandage. This will decreases swelling of the injured region. Although the wrap should be snug, make sure it is not too tight as this can cause numbness, tingling, or increased pain.

Elevation:

Elevate the injured area above the level of the heart as much as possible. This technique will also assist in reducing the amount of swelling to the injured site.

Snail Runners at the Epic Relay

Thanks to Chris Sports for staging another Epic Relay 250. It was truly an Epic adventure!

Thanks to Jaymie Pizzaro, The Bull Runner, for the free race kit! We’ve been thinking about it, but the free race kit pushed us to actually take on the challenge.

Thanks to HasTravel for choosing us for the “hassle-free team” award :)

Thanks to everyone who supported us financially, with supplies, with well wishes, with good vibes and prayers. We could not have done it without you!

10 runners in 2 vans, running 250km in 27hours — its more fun with Snail Runners!

==========

I saw TBR’s post giving away a free Epic Relay slot and shared it with the Snail Runners — we’ve been talking about joining the Epic relay, forming “teams” but not really taking it seriously… how the heck are we going to come up with P13k for the registration? And we have to raise funds to rent vans and buy supplies!

I really did not think we would win. I was surprised when I got a call that Friday evening telling me that we won the contest, that I’ve been named team captain (huwaaat?!), and that I have to attend the meeting the next day.

I bugged everyone I knew till we came up with a team of 10 runners. I downloaded the race bible and maps and started assigning legs to each runner. We also posted messages and contacted other members to ask for pledges and contributions.

I was so surprised that we were able to pull it off in such a short amount of time. I also felt so lucky that there were no divas among the 10 runners, and they trusted me with their leg assignments (hehehe). We were a little concerned about the “no stopping between legs” rule — but I figured each runner can manage up to 11km by himself/herself since we’ve all done marathons!

As expected, we had difficulty running legs 3 to 12 as the route was mostly uphill and we had to do it in the morning/early afternoon heat. We were able to go a bit faster running downhill and with cooler temperatures for legs 13-20. We were a little worried about running in the dark — fortunately, the organizers allowed the support vehicles to follow the runners to provide some light. Also, our bike marshalls stayed with us throughout the whole race (salamat mga kuya!!!). Running the last 10 legs was a bit more relaxing as the route was mostly flat — though I was hoping we could finish by 6am so that no one will have to run in the heat AGAIN.

Our last runner, X, crossed the finish line at 8:27am — 27hours and 37mins since gun start. We were the 14th team to cross the finish line, 4th in the mixed team category. Not bad :)
